Late acne – what helps with pimples in adulthood?

For many people, the topic of impure skin is far from over when they are over 20, because the reasons for pimples and blackheads are many and varied. But what really helps to combat blemished skin in the long term? Tikbow has clarified the most important questions about late acne with experts.

Who gets acne in adulthood?

Acne is a skin disease in which sebum production increases and sebaceous glands become inflamed. Increased formation of horny material, which clogs the sebaceous glands, favors this. Unlike acne in adolescence, acne vulgaris, acne tarda only appears in adults between the ages of 25 and 45,” says Dr. Kim Christian Heronimus, head physician of dermatology at the Lausitzer Seenwald Klinikum. Often the concerning – mostly women – already had acne in their youth. Particularly nasty: Spätakne can occur however also completely plötzlich with someone, who had before never skin problems.

What are the causes of acne?

In most cases, there is not just one but several causes of acne in adulthood: hormonal changes such as discontinuation of the pill or pregnancy, medication, bacteria or genetic predisposition to oily skin are common causes. In adult acne patients, stress-related  overproduction of sebum is also often observed. People who are under pressure at work or in their private lives release more adrenaline, cortisone, and the male sex hormone testosterone, hormones that lead to more blemished skin. An excess of testosterone, for example, throws the female cycle out of balance, which is why skin blemishes in women tend to be cycle-dependent.

How is acne treated?

Rule number one: impurities should never be squeezed out by yourself. This can cause further bacteria to enter the skin and acne can spread. Instead, sufferers should always consult a dermatologist. Treatment is very complex depending on the severity and skin condition and is always individual. Sometimes an antibacterial cream is sufficient to reduce the excessive production of sebum. In more severe cases, antibiotics, vitamin A acid, hormone preparations or light therapy are used. Regular visits to the beautician are also worthwhile – only an expert can remove blackheads professionally and effectively.

Does a lack of facial cleansing promote acne?

Since our skin is supposed to regenerate overnight and form new cells, thorough facial cleansing is essential. Dr. Uta Schlossberger, medical director of dermatology at Kolumbahof in Cologne, explains to Tikbow: “If make-up, powder or fine dust clog our pores, this process is sensitively disturbed and our skin can react with irritation, dryness and even acne and fine lines. A thorough facial cleansing is also important to remove dead skin cells – otherwise the skin will quickly appear large-pored.

Tips against acne in adulthood

The right skin care

Many assume that spätakne is a result of uncleanliness and therefore resort to harsh cleansers such as soap, alcohol-based facial toners and scrubs. This reduces the skinäs acid content, which acts like a protective shield against bacteria. "Use mild, skin-neutral and soap-free products that do not irritate the skin" advises Dr. Heronimus. However, it is very important in the fight against acne that both care and make-up are non-comedogenic, i.e. do not create new blackheads. The care products should therefore be as free of oil and grease as possible, so as not to clog the pores again.

A balanced diet

Those who observe acne especially in connection with stress should think about a general lifestyle change. This means: no cigarettes, no alcohol and regular downtime in everyday life. Dr. Heronimus also advises a change in diet: "Do without dairy products, eliminate animal fats, high-sugar soft drinks and fast food from your diet. Plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains, lots of water and unhealthy teas are ideal, says the expert.

Clean beauty products regularly

Experts advise that things that come into contact with the face should be cleaned regularly – this includes in particular make-up brushes and swabs, but also hands or cell phones. You should also avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

Home remedies against spätakne

If pimples have developed, zinc, calendula and silver ointments or high-quality tea tree oil from the pharmacy can help. But helpers in the fight against clogged pores and impure skin can also be found in the home. A chamomile tea steam bath opens the pores and prepares the skin for the subsequent facial cleansing. Bananas are also said to help against acne, and the antiseptic ingredients on the inside of the banana peel are said to eliminate skin germs that are responsible for pimples.

Model Kendall Jenner, on the other hand, uses a very special face mask to prevent pimples: Beat an egg white, stir in the squeezed juice of a lemon and spread the mixture generously over the face. After half an hour, rinse with lukewarm water and you are done.
