Tips for keeping your hair beautiful as you get older

A great head of hair even in old age? Yes, it is possible. The right care and a balanced diet are crucial. Tikbow explains what women can do to keep their mane beautiful for a long time.

Färben, styling, care – many women invest lots of time and money in their hairstyle. Unfortunately, it is often the case that hair becomes increasingly brittle instead of malleable with age, loses strength and shine, and becomes increasingly thinner. "This is a normal aging process of the hair roots", explains Andreas Finner, expert für hair medicine and hair transplantation in Berlin. Nevertheless, it is possible to counteract this process to some extent.

Get advice from professionals

The first place to go for advice is not only the hairdresser’s salon, but also dermatologists. Many of them offer a hair consultation. There, deficiencies or pathological causes of unhealthy-looking hair or hair loss can be clarified and treated.

The right diet

In addition to hormonal changes, the reason for thinning hair can be, for example, a disturbance of the thyroid gland. Stress and vitamin deficiency also do not have a good effect on hair. In such cases, regular relaxation and a balanced and healthy diet may already have an effect.

Important substances for the hair are zinc, vitamin D and biotin. Zinc is found in milk, yogurt, cheese and meat. Vitamin D is found, for example, in fatty fish such as mackerel, salmon and herring. Liver, egg yolk and yeast are sources of biotin. "For brüchigen hair, an additional intake of capsules with medicinal yeast, the amino acid cystine and B vitamins can help", says Finner.

Drink plenty of water

But hair also benefits from a change in everyday habits. Antonio Weinitschke, a master hairdresser from Aachen, advises people to drink plenty of water. The reason: If the body is not supplied with enough fluid, the skin cells and also the scalp cells become dry. This means that not enough moisture reaches the hair roots.

The right care for beautiful hair in old age

In addition, the scalp produces less sebum with advancing age, which also makes the hair drier. This makes it all the more important to use care that is tailored to the type. Weinitschke generally recommends a mild shampoo. Rinse the hair with as little water as possible. Afterwards, conditioners or spa packs can add moisture and elasticity to spruced-up or dry hair.

Attention: Do not care for fine hair too richly. "Sometimes the hair looks fluffier if you wash it öfter with less rich shampoo for fine hair&", says dermatologist Finner.

The right styling

A permanent wave can give the hairstyle additional frizz. It is important that it is done professionally and tailored to the hair type. Hairspray, which often provides additional shine, does not harm the hair even with age. Aggressive brushing, on the other hand, should be avoided, as should too hot blow-drying and toupeeing. This can lead to further damage to the hair. Hair coloring, on the other hand, is still possible without any problems in old age. The new hair color often provides more shine in the hair and protects it from UV radiation.

The influence of menopause on hair

Hormonal changes during menopause can also have an adverse effect on the hair. "A hormone replacement therapy with Östrogenen only because of the hair is however not generally to be recommended", says dermatologist Finner. Also vegetable Phytoöstrogene do not bring necessarily the desired success. According to the physician, it has not yet been clearly proven scientifically that phytoöstrogens actually have a positive effect on hair.

What helps with hair loss?

Hair loss is a problem for many older women. This can be a side effect of certain medications, says master hairdresser Weinitschke, who is art director of the Central Association of the German Hairdressing Trade. Certain skin diseases or inflammations are also sometimes accompanied by hair loss.

Often medicinal tinctures applied to the scalp can additionally stimulate hair growth, says dermatologist and hair medicine expert Finner. Sometimes however permanently many light places show up on the head. Those affected can find out in a hair consultation which solutions are then available – such as thickening with stray hair or a hair transplant.
