Just like in the fashion world, trends in the hairstyle world keep coming back. Be it the mullet or the grunge style, there are many great hair trends from the past years that we love in 2022 as well. This includes the cool S-shaped waves, which are a total hit especially for long hair. The trend for 2022 is ‘Scandi Waves’ or Scandinavian waves, and as the name suggests, they come from that region of Northern Europe that has become the new paradigm of fashion. What do the trendy Scandi Waves look like?
Scandi waves have been around for a while, but we’re glad they’re finally getting the moment they deserve. If you’re wondering what this trendy hairstyle is made of, think Hollywood Waves with the usual loose kink but with a hint of texture. In contrast, Scandinavian waves are also styled closer together. The hairstyle is a modern take on the Hollywood wave – just looser and with a casual undone look.
We’ve seen Sophie Turner at the MET Gala and Zendaya every other day of the week giving us this bendy yet sublime “S” curl – with a real Y2K feel. And we can see why this hairstyle had all the gals googling how to do curls with a straightening iron. It looks a bit casual, but it’s still a statement.
Scandinavian waves are also a polished version of beach waves, which are back in trend every summer . For this, the hair does not need to be textured or even heated – there are several techniques for this.
The idea is to create curls that are tighter than beach waves, but less artificial than a Hollywood wave. With Scandi Waves, the wave is practically born from the root, as if imitating the behavior of naturally wavy hair.
How to restyle the Scandi waves look yourself.
If the architectural manes we see on the red carpets require multiple hands and hair pieces, the Scandinavian waves are a hit precisely because of their simplicity. There are a few ways to achieve this look. We’ll show you two – one with heat and one without. One is quicker, the other longer, but both are so simple that you don’t need professional styling to achieve them.
Here’s how to achieve Scandi Waves without heat.
If you want to do your curls without heat, you can create the wavy look when you sleep with braided hair. Depending on the structure of your hair, it can be beneficial to braid not just one braid, but several, with thinner strands, to create more small waves and that effect reminiscent of Mermaid Waves. Another tip: slightly dampen the hair before braiding. You can also do the braids after washing your hair. This will definitely make the waves more structured.
The next morning, simply undo the braids and comb through the hair with your fingers or a coarse-toothed comb. Finally, use a drying oil or conditioning oil for added shine and moisture.
How to style wavy hair with a curling iron or straightener.
To create this look, you can also use a special triple curling iron or waving iron. With it, you can quickly restyle the casual Scandi Waves without much effort.
However, it is not necessary to buy a special styling tool to get the trend curls. You can also create this look with a straightening iron. Here’s how:
- Start by pinning up the top part of your hair, leaving out the bottom one to two inches of hair so that the top part doesn’t get in the way.
- To create the S wave, start by pulling up the first strand of hair and pushing your hair into the first curve with your fingers.
- Once the curve is in shape, take the straightener and gently tap over the curve to lock the shape in place.
- From here, you can either continue to push the hair into the next counter curve (creating the first “S” shape) or drop the straightener and use both hands to maintain the shape. Tap the straightener over this new curve. Repeat this process until you get to the ends of the hair.
- Repeat the process for each strand of hair.
- It can get a little tricky in the back, but if you set up a mirror in front and behind you, it will be a little easier.
- Use your favorite styling product and run your fingers through your hair to loosen and separate the waves.

The most important thing about the Scandi Wave is that you only need to tap the straightener along the S-shape, without holding it in the S-shape for a long time. Since certain straighteners can reach a heat of 200 degrees or more, be sure to use heat protection as well.
