Depp filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife for writing an opinion piece in the Washington Post in 2018 in which she described herself as a public figure advocating domestic violence. Depp’s lawyers claim that Heard abused him, and not the other way around. To prove this, they brought forth a number of witnesses who knew the couple and claimed to have never seen any injuries on Heard. They played various recordings in which Heard mocks and insults Depp. The actor said that people in the entertainment industry began to think he was a “fraud” when Heard made her claims, and that she thus destroyed his career, costing him “everything.”

Heard alleges that Depp repeatedly physically and sexually abused her, which worsened when he drank heavily and used drugs, particularly cocaine and MDMA. The defense called several witnesses who testified to seeing Depp in various states of intoxication. Most of them testified they did not see Depp hit Heard , but they observed him become jealous and angry on several occasions. Heard also says that due to several comments made by Depp’s lawyers Adam Waldman to the media, she lost career opportunities by claiming her allegations were false.

After weeks of explosive testimony in the Fairfax, Virginia courtroom, the verdict is in. Jurors said that Amber Heard defamed Johnny in her allegations and that the Aquaman star acted with “actual malice” in making her claims. They awarded Johnny $10 million in damages. On top of that, they added $5 million in punitive costs, so Johnny was awarded a total of $15 million.

There was a partial victory for Amber, however, as jurors awarded her $2 million after finding that Johnny had defamed her through his attorney Adam Waldman. Amber was present at the dramatic moment, but Johnny was not there as he was in the UK performing at a rock concert.

It is important to know that despite her defamation conviction, she will not go to jail, since it is a civil case and not a criminal one.
