Does healing clay really help with pimples and oily skin?

Healing clay is said to have many good properties: it is said to bring stressed facial skin back into balance, help with clogged pores and at the same time supply the skin with important minerals. What to look for when using it? Tikbow asked a dermatologist.

Healing clay is a special mixture of lye and contains many minerals and trace elements such as zinc, iron, magnesium or silica, which are good for the skin and can help it fight against dirt particles, talc and bacteria.

How does healing clay work?

A mask with healing clay creates a sponge-like suction effect. The reason lies in the cooling of the special earth – each individual grain is tiny and measures only about one thousandth of a millimeter. However, because the number is huge, the result is a larger surface area than with normal soil. "But no toxins of the skin are absorbed", räumt the dermatologist Yael Adler, the reason: "The skin has no toxins at all and if, then not in appreciable quantity." What a mask of healing clay really does: "Basically, the skin is dried out, fat is absorbed, thereby a skin prone to acne is somewhat degreased." In addition, the moisture can be increased by the minerals contained.

Healing clay also has an exfoliating effect that removes horny peeling. "Together with the drying effect and with the minerals contained in the healing clay, there is an antibacterial effect in terms of changing the skin flora", explains Dr. Adler, where flora means the natural bacterial colonization on the skin.

Should distilled water be used for the mask?

In the cosmetics industry, distilled water is often used in the manufacture of beauty products. The water obtained in this way is free of salt and impurities, is non-irritating to the skin and has a skin-friendly pH value. Nevertheless, Yael Adler does not think that distilled water should necessarily be used when mixing a healing clay mask. "When you apply the mask, you can use ordinary water. This will not significantly change the effectiveness of the product. And normal water is not harmful to the skin, on the contrary;

For oily skin healing clay helps only symptomatically

If a mask with healing clay is applied to the epidermis, the excess fat is removed. Adler admits, however, that this also removes non-excess fat, i.e. the desired fat. The result: the skin feels drier. The sebaceous glands, on the other hand, which are überactive, continue to work as usual. They don’t care what’s going on up there on the horny layer,"according to Dr. Adler. Meaning: When we degrease our skin, we only remove the fats from the epidermis and the sebaceous glands. "We get a dry and tense skin feeling, at the same time the pores continue to produce. That is why this is actually only a symptomatic matter", explains the dermatologist. However, the exfoliating effect of the fine grains removes horny pores and clogging horny plugs from the pores and opens up blackheads so that sebum can drain away more easily. This can be helpful for acne-prone skin.

Warm water and a towel help with oily skin

According to the dermatologist, the good effects of healing clay lie in its absorbing effect, its exfoliating effect and the minerals it contains, which rehydrate the skin. But it can also be too much of a good thing, which is why healing clay is not always the best therapy. In the case of acne, I recommend seeing a dermatologist, there are efficient therapies available on prescription, cosmetic treatments are therefore only a supplement,” says Adler.

This mask helps with oily skin

If you suffer from oily skin, add one teaspoon of facial water with witch hazel to two teaspoons of healing clay, which also has an anti-inflammatory effect. Alternatively, a little lukewarm sage tea can be added. The paste mixed with water should be applied to the skin twice a week as a mask. After 20 minutes, gently remove the dried healing clay with lukewarm water and a soft washcloth or sponge.

For dry skin, jojoba oil gives the extra kick.

For dry skin, a mask made of two heaped teaspoons of healing clay with a few dashes of moisturizing jojoba oil is recommended. Alternatively, fragrant almond or coconut oil can be used. Mix it all together with a little water to form a paste, which you carefully apply to your facial skin once a month. Always avoid the mouth and eye areas! Leave the healing clay mask on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Healing clay can help if it is well tolerated.

"Anyone who has skin complaints should always go to the dermatologist, otherwise the complaints threaten to become chronic. It is also important to find out where the complaints actually come from", according to the clear opinion of Dr. Yael Adler. Healing earth is indeed one of the things that can be used in her opinion if the symptoms are good and the patient can tolerate it well. Otherwise, I always find: warm water and a towel is enough. And always apply cream only to the areas where the skin is in need, dry and taut. But never slather the entire face. Very many skin problems can also be solved by “less is more,” says the physician. The balance comes then after approximately four weeks without soaps, Schäume, Mizellenwasser and Tinkturen in the face – then one would notice only, which skin type one really is.
