The fact that Instagram deletes pictures showing female nipples is nothing new. For this policy, however, it hails criticism again and again. Now superstar Madonna made a clear statement after her revealing photos were removed from the platform.
"I still find it amazing that we live in a culture that allows every inch of the female body to be shown, except for the nipple. As if that were the only part of the female anatomy that could be sexualized," the 63-year-old wrote of a series of photos showing her in lingerie on a bed, her nipples covered only by heart emojis. Previously, Madonna had uploaded the pictures to Instagram uncensored – nipple flash included. This series of photos was then deleted without warning or notification, the singer said in her post.
In the comments under her Instagram post, many women agree with Madonna, posting #FreeTheNipple under the censored pictures of the singer. Under the hashtag, women repeatedly report that pictures showing their nipples are deleted from various platforms without warning.
Why does Instagram delete nipple posts like Madonna’s?
But why are pictures of female nipples deleted at all? Instagram’s policy on banning nude photos states: "This also applies to photos, videos and some digitally created content that shows sexual intercourse, genitals and close-ups of naked faces. This includes certain photos of female nipples." However, female nipples are permitted in the context of breastfeeding, childbirth, or to draw attention to health issues. Similar rules also apply on Facebook. Male nipples are exempt from the rule on both platforms.
