Lawn fertilizer for autumn: when and why autumn fertilization is so important and how to do it correctly

Time to do the last big gardening jobs and prepare part of the garden for winter. Among other things, this includes proper lawn care in the fall, which includes autumn lawn fertilization. Not only is the timing right, but the fertilizer should fit as well. What you should consider when fertilizing your lawn in the fall and when you should fertilize, we summarize for you in our article.

When the last time to fertilize lawn?

When to distribute lawn fertilizer for autumn

When it comes to when to administer the fall lawn fertilizer, you have a pretty big window of opportunity. It’s best to have the big heat waves over already, so don’t start this gardening task until late September at the earliest. If you can’t get it done in the first few weeks, it doesn’t matter, because you can take your time with it until early/mid-November.

Tip: Follow the weather forecast. It’s helpful to spread your fall lawn fertilizer before a rainy day, because the rain will help release the nutrients faster and get them into the soil where the roots can absorb them.

What lawn fertilizer to use in the fall?

Which lawn fertilizer is the right one for autumn

The purpose of fall fertilization for lawns is to get them through the winter well, with the fertilizer providing them with nutrients before the big cold snap, making them more robust. The result is a healthy and green lawn in the spring and summer. But for this, of course, you need to use the right lawn fertilizer for the fall. Which one is it?

It is important that you choose autumn lawn fertilizer with long-term effect, which will provide the lawn with nutrients for the next 10 weeks. The best lawn fertilizer for autumn is an organic fertilizer, which is especially rich in potassium, because it strengthens the cells and thus the blades and makes them more resistant to frost by lowering the freezing point of the cell sap. So, in principle, potassium acts as an antifreeze. It also prevents diseases (e.g. snow mold), which can occur more frequently in this wet season.

Combine the autumn fertilizer for the lawn with liming.

It is particularly important that the lawn fertilizer for the fall is not rich in phosphorus and nitrogen. These two substances have a growth-promoting effect, which would have exactly the opposite effect. Growing blades of grass are softer and therefore more sensitive. If you take fertilizer from the store, which is designed specifically for this season, you can not go wrong. There are also mixtures of seed and autumn fertilizer for the lawn, if you want to not only fertilize the lawn, but also to repair it.

Autumn fertilization makes the lawn strong and more robust against frost

In addition to the lawn fertilizer for the fall, you can also treat the lawn with lime. This balances the pH of the soil and ensures the lawn has the neutral soil it prefers. Especially if you want to combine fall lawn fertilizer with weed killer, lime makes sense, because this way you make life difficult for moss, for example. You have until December to apply lime. You can read more about how to do this here.

Spreading the autumn fertilizer for the lawn correctly

Lawn fertilizer for the fall - tips for proper spreading

There are special tools that make it easier to spread the fertilizer. However, if you want to work by hand (with gloves), first prepare the necessary amount according to the square meters of your lawn and then spread the first half longitudinally over the lawn, and then the second in another layer crosswise. This way you are most likely to apply the fertilizer evenly.

Then water the area. This is very important especially if no rain is expected in the coming days (but not only), otherwise the agent may burn the lawn.

Lawn fertilization in the autumn months and other maintenance measures

Have a few patches and bare patches formed here and there over the summer season? No problem, because now is the perfect time to reseed and repair such blemishes. This is a good idea not only from an aesthetic point of view. Such bare patches are also weak spots on the lawn, which are quickly used by weeds to establish themselves. A dense turf, on the other hand, prevents this. In addition to the autumn fertilizer for the lawn, the following maintenance measures are beneficial:

Fertilize lawn for the winter and reseed in spots

  • You can dethatch the lawn now , thus ensuring better aeration and preventing matted areas.
  • When you mow for the last time this season, set the lawn mower lower than usual. You should shorten the blades of grass to about 4 cm. This has the purpose that the blades do not just fold over the heavy snow cover. After all, if they remain like this afterwards, moisture accumulates underneath, which provides ideal conditions for fungal diseases.
  • For the same reason, you should regularly remove fallen leaves in the fall. They can lead to mold growth.
  • In the summer, lawn clippings may well be left lying around as long as they can dry quickly. In this season it is no longer recommended (also to prevent fungal diseases).
  • From the first frost you should limit the use of the lawn, so as not to strain it too much.
