Dethatching or aerating the lawn?

Lawn dethatching instructions and tips around the cut

Many amateur gardeners wonder whether they should dethatch or aerate their lawns in the spring. The two terms are often confused, when in fact they are two completely different gardening tasks.

Dethatching involves mowing the lawn close to the ground. The blades of grass should be no more than 3 inches high. Dethatching is done no more than twice a year – once in the spring and once in the fall. The grasses then need some time to recover and grow again.

In contrast, aerating can be done once a month. It is much gentler on the lawn, but can not completely replace dethatching.

In the specialized garden centers you can rent a lawn aerator and a scarifier. Alternatively, you can invest in a combination device.

When is the best time to scarify the lawn?

About two weeks after fertilizing is the right time to scarify the lawn. Choose a frost-free day. Very important condition for the final result is that the lawn is dry.

The right height is very important when scarifying. If you cut the lawn too deep, then you can damage the roots and the grasses will die at this point. If you leave the grass blades higher than 3 mm, then weeds can spread. Try to scarify the lawn as evenly as possible. Run the machine over the lawn only once. After scarifying, be sure to rake the lawn residue.

After scarifying, you can reseed the lawn if necessary. If there are individual bare spots, then you can simply sprinkle the seeds. For larger lawns, you can use a spreader truck. The seeds take four weeks to grow and reach about 12 inches in height.  Then it is the right time to aerate the lawn for the first time.

When is dethatching unnecessary?

As a rule, annual dethatching is an absolute must. If you miss the right time in the spring, be sure to dethatch the lawn in the fall. Otherwise, you risk drying out the lawn, weakening it significantly and causing moss to spread.

There are exceptions, however. Sometimes lawn dethatching is unnecessary. For example, if the garden soil has a high sand content and is loose. Moss and weeds don’t stand a chance there. Therefore, you can save yourself the trouble.

If you lay the lawn in the spring, dethatching can be omitted for the first time. However, you should aerate it regularly in the summer. Dethatching in the fall is also unnecessary and can be postponed until next spring.

Three common maintenance mistakes

Maintain lawn common mistakes and useful tips

1 Choosing the wrong time. Like many gardening tasks, dethatching is related to the weather. If you dethatch your lawn too early, you risk night frost setting in again and freezing the lawn. To avoid this, check the current 14-day weather forecast.

2. scarify a wet or damp lawn. If it has rained in the last few days, wait to dethatch. The lawn should be completely dry.

3. scarify the lawn first and then fertilize it. The correct way would be the opposite – first provide the lawn with nutrients , so that it can recover well from pruning.
