Painting and embellishing Crocs: which colors are best?

  • DIY

You find your Crocs too boring and want to embellish them? Since the comfortable clogs are usually monochrome, they offer the ideal canvas for creative projects . So how about painting and customizing your Crocs? We now explain what you need to consider and which colors are best.

What are Crocs made of?

At first glance, you might think that Crocs are made of either hard plastic or heavy rubber. But in reality, they are made of a material called “Croslite” which is neither plastic nor rubber. It is a cell-sealed synthetic resin mixture that does not emit any harmful substances and is really easy to clean. Making Crocs out of Croslite makes sense because the material still prevents sweating and foot odor. It also allows us to wear the shoes on land and in water. Imitation Crocs, on the other hand, are often made of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Regardless of whether you wear a real or fake pair of Crocs, you can decorate them with paint.

Painting Crocs: What colors are suitable?

If you want to spice up the boring shoes, you can use different colors. Choosing the appropriate color depends on what results you want to achieve. You may not want to keep the designs you paint on the Crocs permanently. In this case, depending on your needs, you need to choose a color that can be easily removed. We summarize all the options below.

Important: If you want to paint or dye your Crocs permanently, you need to keep in mind that not every paint will stick to the material. So it often happens that you paint the clogs and the paint comes off later.

Painting Crocs with acrylic paints

Acrylic paint is one of the most flexible paints you can use for painting your Crocs. Acrylic paints are great for Crocs because unlike other paints, they don’t crack, peel or fade. With acrylic paint, you can easily change the overall color of the shoes or paint any patterns on them to give your own touch to the comfortable shoes.

Here’s how to do it step by step

Painting Crocs is a fun activity that is pretty simple. First, you need to gather all the necessary materials. So acrylic paints, brushes and something to cover the work area must already be present.

It is beneficial to sketch your design on the Crocs with a piece of chalk before painting. This will ensure that you do exactly what you want and don’t make a mistake. Once you have sketched your design, you can start painting. It is highly recommended to paint in thin layers.

Once you have finished painting a layer, let it dry before applying the next layer. Acrylic paint dries fairly quickly, so you can continue painting in about twenty minutes.

Once your design is finished and you have applied all the layers you want, you will need to seal the Crocs. This will keep the design intact and prevent the paint from peeling off the surface of the shoe. For this, it is best to use an acrylic clear coat.

After the sealer is applied, wait at least 24 hours before wearing the painted Crocs. If you’re not sure if the paint has dried completely, it can’t hurt to let the shoes dry a little longer before wearing them.

Embellish Crocs with spray paint

Whether you want to completely recolor your Crocs, or embellish them with some designs, spray paints are also a suitable choice. Here, however, there is a risk that the paint cracks or breaks over time. To prevent this from happening, you can use a method known as hydro-dipping. To do this, fill a large container with water, spray acrylic or latex paint on the surface and dip the clean Crocs into the paints. You can repeat this process until you get the desired result.

Can Crocs be painted with fabric paints?

Fabric painting paints are also good for Crocs. The “Crocs” brand even offers special felt tip pens designed for use on Crocs. However, unlike acrylic paints, fabric paints are washable. Since they are washable, you can paint your Crocs as often as you like. This is a convenient option if you want to change the design regularly. However, sudden rain can cause the paint to run quickly.

For crafting and painting with kids, watercolors are super. Are you just looking for a creative DIY project for the weekend? Then set the table and get out the watercolors to create colorful Crocs with the kids. Just like fabric crayons, you’ll get rid of watercolors quickly. Just wash them off with soap and water and you’re done.

Almost all shoes can be easily painted with a sharpie. The paint also holds wonderfully on Crocs. Use different colors as desired to create colorful patterns or draw playful designs. This option is also best if you want to label the Crocs. If you’re not happy with the design, the marker can be removed fairly easily with nail polish remover.
