Making figures from car tires for the garden – instructions for Minions, swan, frogs and a coffee cup

  • DIY

Whether as an accessory in the children’s play corner or as a fun decoration somewhere in the middle of the flower bed, figures made of car tires can be a really fun accessory and eye-catcher. Depending on the figure, you may not need more than a tire and paint or just a few additional materials such as wires or wooden beams, but the bottom line is that it is not difficult to make. We have looked for a few ideas that you can implement in your little paradise.

Crafting figures from car tires – common materials

For most figures from car tires you will need one and the same tools and materials. Some equipment, if necessary, you can replace with more commonplace, if you do not have them at hand, but you will complicate your work. In general, you should have the following ready:

  • Tire
  • Colored paint
  • jigsaw (or very sharp and large knife)
  • Drill

For this cute cup, which you can use as a flower pot, you need a round plywood plate as a base, which has a slightly wider diameter than the tire. This plate represents the saucer, but it can also be omitted to ensure better drainage, for example (or you can cut a hole in the middle for this purpose, so you get a ring). Furthermore, use two hoops, the upper one is best to be slightly larger to get the typical cup shape.

From the upper one, cut a strip along the seam with a jigsaw, so that the edge can curve outward (to be able to apply the jigsaw, first drill a hole in the rubber). Cut out the handle from a third tire, more specifically the part with the tread, which should be easy to bend afterwards. Now paint the tires and tire parts in the desired colors and let them dry (if necessary, apply a second coat).

Now bend the handle to the desired position and drill holes through the handle and tire, then fix the former with carriage bolts. Place or glue the tires on the plate and preferably right where you want them in the garden. If you wish, make several figures from car tires at once and arrange them in groups in the garden. Fill them with soil and plant them .

For the swan, there are several ways to cut up the tire, but by and large, you only need the one and possibly a second as a support in which to place the swan. You cut only the top half of the hoop: a narrow strip in the middle for the long neck and head, and the two outer parts that remain, bend slightly to the side to get the wings. This is the simplest version.

You can now decorate these wings additionally, if you feel like it, by creating jagged edges to represent the plumage. You can also form a tail with the back part of the hoop. Then all you have to do is paint it.

Use at least three pieces for these figures from car tires or better combine even larger and smaller Minions. The top tire is the head and will be yellow. On the rest you design the blue pants. You can paint on the eyes or make them with cans, lids or other recycled items.

Decorate the flower bed with a frog.

A frog like this is also guaranteed to cause a smile. You’ll need three larger and two smaller hoops for him, and there’s no need to cut and drill either. You can also replace the small tires with other materials (such as cans, lids or small buckets). After painting them green, place two of the hoops side by side on the floor and the third one centered on the bottom two.

You can leave out the front legs, but you can also make them quickly and easily with floating noodles, pipe insulation, or elastic tubing (from an old vacuum cleaner, for example). The feet are either made of cardboard (not waterproof!) or you can make them out of foam rubber, tire rubber or another weatherproof material. So you can get really creative with the frog from car tires, too.

Figures from old car tires – horse swing for children.

Not only decorative, but also useful are figures from car tires, which you can use for swinging. This idea with horse figurine is a little more elaborate, but it is always worth it. Using the template in the picture above, you can see how you should cut the tire. For this purpose, again use a jigsaw, which you can insert into the rubber after drilling a hole in it.

As sturdy as the rubber seems to be, it’s probably not enough for sitting. Therefore, you will need to make the seat area and the horse’s neck more stable with metal rods. You’ll also hold the individual pieces in place by fastening them together with carriage bolts. Still tie rope and add a mane at will, and the horse from car tires is ready.
