Make fly curtain yourself: How to make a thread curtain from macramé or beads

  • DIY

Summertime has finally begun, but with it also the insect plague. Flies, moths, mosquitoes and the like keep invading our homes and making our lives miserable. So it makes sense to take precautions to prevent the pesky critters from entering the house in the first place, or at least to reduce them significantly. Fly screens are ideal for windows and there are of course also for doors, but with the latter they can be quite annoying, especially if you go in and out more often (for example, to take the dishes and food outside). And if you leave the grille open during this time, the house will be full of flying insects again. A good and, above all, chic alternative is a thread curtain for the door and today we will show you some ideas with which you can make such a fly curtain yourself.

Macramé curtain for the door

Macrame curtains are back in vogue, as well as all other accessories and decorations in boho style. That’s why a macramé door curtain is also a wonderful idea if you want to protect your home from the annoying intruders in a stylish and decorative way. Here’s how you can make the chic fly curtain yourself:

  • Curtain rod of the desired length (made of wood, plastic or metal, as you like)
  • thin rope
  • brackets for the rod
  • white insulating tape

If you want, you can, as in the instructions for the thread curtain for the door, first use colorful wool threads to practice knotting a little , if you have not done macramé before. Or you can start right away with the rope. The curtain from the example consists of a total of 15 groups of 2 ropes, each with a length of 500 cm. You then place each rope over the pole so that the center is at the very top. Then tie knots in groups of two below the bar. Then you can start tying the knots as follows:

If you want to make the fly curtain yourself, divide the four strands per group. Leave the middle two in the middle, take the left strand and pass it under these two middle ones. Now take the right one, place it on the right side under the former left strand, then over the middle two and pass it under the left strand again on the left side. Now repeat this with the other groups, making sure it is always at one and the same height.

Then you need a second row, but always connecting two groups, but with the same knotting method. This time the middle strands are simply the rightmost of the first group and the leftmost of the second group, around which you again tie two of the middle strands, as shown in the instructions. Again, repeat this first with all the groups before moving on to the next row, which you will knot again in the original group arrangement. You can tie as many of these rows as you like. However, keep in mind that they will need room to pass underneath as well. So you can test hang the curtain on the door after a few rows to check this.

The same knotting technique you can use if you want to hang a curtain insect screen made of beads. The only difference is that after each knot you thread a bead on the middle two strands, then also tie the strands below the bead to fix them and, of course, repeat the whole thing with all groups of ropes and rows. Then leave the remaining ropes just hanging as in the variation above, or decorate them with beads as well, tying knots at the end to hold them in place.

Since the beads have quite a small hole, thick ropes are less suitable if you want to make such a fly curtain yourself. Instead, you can use sturdy yarn.

If you want the classic beaded curtain with simple hanging down threads full of beads, you do not need special tying skills. However, you will need to allow plenty of time for crafting – and materials as well (remember that an average bracelet alone requires at least 24 beads). The exact number, of course, depends on the length and width of the curtain, as well as the size of the beads, but you should plan on several hundred. If you are making a fly curtain for the patio door or balcony door, don’t leave too much space between each strand so that the flies can’t fly through the gaps.

After you have measured the necessary length and want to cut the threads, plan for an additional 15 to 30 cm. Choose strong thread that can withstand the weight and believe us – if you want to make a fly curtain yourself with beads, there will be a decent weight. Don’t be fooled by the small sizes of the beads. You can get advice on this in the store. However, common beaded yarn should be fine. Accordingly, the curtain rod must also be sufficiently stable.

You can then either tie the yarn directly around the rod or screw hooks at equal intervals and then tie the yarn there. Then you can start to thread the beads . If you thread the end of the yarn into a pin, the needle will make it easier to put through the small holes in the beads, which will save you a lot of time. Finally, tie a tight double knot so that the beads are tight, and you can move on to the next thread.
