Make pumpkin decoration yourself for autumn
The special thing about velvet fabric is, among other things, its shimmering appearance. With this he promptly creates an elegant eye-catcher that fits into any interior style, as we will show you following the DIY instructions with several examples. However, a decorative pumpkin made of velvet is not only ideally suited for your own home, but also represents a great gift that will always remind the recipient of you.
Especially typical autumn colors are suitable, including purple and dark green. Or how about designing the decorative pumpkin in gold? Just choose a suitable color, because the gold shimmer is brought automatically by the fabric. Thus, other metallic colors are also suitable: gray velvet for silver, for example, or rust red for copper . The arrangement with decorative velvet pumpkin will be even more autumnal if you combine several at once and also use different colors.
So you can make the pumpkin decoration itself :
Decorative pumpkin from velvet sew yourself in simple steps.
You will need:
- elastic velvet fabric in any color (feel free to combine several with each other); for three sizes they in the example about one square meter
- fabric scissors
- upholstery thread (unwaxed floss is also suitable)
- Sewing needle
- beans or rice for filling
- dried pumpkin or zucchini stem
- hot glue
- optional: padding needle, funnel
Dry the stalk: let it air dry for 8 weeks, in the oven at 90 degrees for about an hour.
Spread the fabric out in front of you with the wrong side facing up. Now use a sharpie to draw the pumpkin size you want. It does not have to be a perfect circle, because the edge will not be visible at the end. A diameter of 60 cm was chosen for the large pumpkin, and 40 cm for the medium one. If you value a perfect circle, you can also place a plate or bowl upside down on the fabric and trace the circumference. Then cut out the shape.
Then thread the yarn through the sewing needle and start sewing along the edge of the fabric by simple stitches (about 2.5 cm apart) . The stitches are approximately 2.5 cm apart from each other. Once you get back to the beginning, gently pull the thread so that the velvet fabric wrinkles and creates a kind of bag. Don’t pull it all the way closed yet, though, because now you need to fill it with rice or beans. A funnel can make this step easier and faster.
Now pull the fabric completely closed, stuffing the edges of the fabric inside. Sew the hole shut with a few more stitches to make sure everything is tightly sealed and the stuffing doesn’t eventually fall out (you can also use a padding needle for the larger pumpkins). Don’t worry if you can see the yarn here and there. This will not be seen afterwards through the stem. However, for this purpose, keep the sewn area as small as possible. Tie a tight knot and tuck the excess thread into the decorative velvet pumpkin.
Finally, glue a stem in the middle with hot glue. However, do not use too much glue, because it could ooze out the sides when you glue it on and thus become visible. Now you can display the finished decorative velvet pumpkin anywhere you like and, if you want, move on to the next one.
