Carnival is approaching and even though big parties will probably not take place due to corona, everyone can still have their own little dress-up party at home . Even the kindergartens will most likely keep up the tradition, so it’s worthwhile to give some thought to the costume now. It is possible that the little ones already have an idea of what they would like to dress up as. However, if you feel like putting together a kids costume yourself this year, it’s worth considering our cool masks made from paper plates. But before you start right away full of motivation and make the carnival masks from paper plates, look at them together with the kids to make sure that they also meet their expectations. And then you can even craft together.

Classic carnival masks made of paper plates
The classic, colorful carnival masks, reminiscent of the traditional ones from Venice and Brazil, are probably among the simplest variants. And this is especially the case if you use paper plates as a base. Once cut out, children can then paint and design their masks in any way they like – in addition to colors, they can also use stones, glitter, pom-poms and other materials of their choice. How to make carnival masks from paper plates, we now explain:
- Paper plates
- Acrylic paints, watercolors or felt pens for painting
- craft knife
- Hole punch
- Rubber or pipe cleaner
If you want to make these simple carnival masks from paper plates , put the plate in front of you and, as shown in the picture, draw the shape of a mask with the eyes. You can do this wonderfully freehand, but if you want the kids to do this step themselves as well, you can also print out the template, cut it out and use it as a stencil. Then cut out the mask along the line. For the eyes, it is best to use a sharp craft knife on a suitable surface (special mat or wooden board). In this case, be sure to have an adult do the step.
Then comes the particularly fun part when you make the carnival masks from paper plates – painting and designing. Here the little ones can really let off steam and create their own unique design. If you like, you can finish by waving the top edge of the mask, but that’s optional. Then punch holes in the two tapered areas and tie on a rubber band tight enough to hold the mask to the head (but not too tight). Alternatively, you can use pipe cleaners like eyeglass temples and just put the mask on.

Creative carnival masks craft from paper plates
Of course, you can vary the shape when you make the children’s masks shown above. For example, you can get a Batman mask by simply adding two pointed ears. This is also suitable for a simple bat costume . You can also make your own carnival masks in other ways: how about the variant with flames to represent fire? No matter what you come up with, afterwards you can decorate as you like. For example, the Batman mask can look much more feminine with a little glitter.
Star Wars masks craft with children
Are there a few little Star Wars fans here ? Then you could together tinker such masks for children and complement the costume. These are Darth Vader and Princess Leia, so perfect for both boys and girls. Would you like to make the carnival masks from paper plates, you need only the following things:
- Paper plates
- Acrylic paints and brushes
- colored paper
- scissors, cutter
- Popsicle stick, paper straw or pipe cleaner
- Glue (e.g. hot glue)
First, draw the outline of each character (freehand or using the template as desired) and cut out the eyes – circular for Leia, triangular for Darth Vader. Use a cutter for the eyes (adults only!). Then the plates can be painted. While the colors are drying, cut out the necessary elements from the colored paper. For Leia you will need two brown circles for the hairstyle, while for Darth Vader you will make two black and one striped gray triangle for the masks for the carnival. Glue these elements as well as the selected stick to hold the mask and still paint the details like cheek red and lips.

Spiderman mask for kids craft
If you want to make carnival masks out of paper plates, Spiderman is also a perfect motif. And what boy would not find this costume cool? You only need a few materials when crafting the Spiderman mask for carnival with kids, and they are the following:
- paper plates
- red, gray and black acrylic paint
- hole punch
- cutter or scissors
- pencil or felt-tip pen
- rubber band
When you make these carnival masks from paper plates, start by drawing the eyes of Spiderman and then cut them out. This works cleanest with a cutter, but scissors are also suitable (cutters for adults only!). Then paint the back of the plate in red paint. Once the paint is dry, outline the eyes with gray paint and then add the spider web. To do this, paint straight lines with black paint leading away from the eyes, like rays. Then connect these lines with lines at intervals to get the typical spider web pattern. Now outline the eyes around the gray paint with black as well and let the colors dry. Punch holes in both sides of the plate, tie gum tightly and you’re done!
