Do you want your tit dumpling holder to be as unobtrusive as possible and blend in with the natural environment? Then how about these ideas for a holder for tit dumplings? Basically, it’s a self-tied/woven cage or basket that you place the dumpling in and then hang it up. The twigs give the birds a good place to hold on to while you feed. In the instructions below, pipe cleaners were used for illustration purposes to make it clearer. In reality, you’ll be using willow twigs when you make this tit dumpling holder yourself.

Take three twigs, place them in front of you and place a group of four twigs crosswise over them. Then wrap a twig twice around where they cross: over the group of four, under the group of three, then over the group of four again and under the group of three. Then take the outermost branch of the group of four (orange in the instructions) and weave it through the six other branches – first through the bottom, then over the next branch, then through the bottom again until you get back to the group of four. Then add a new branch (yellow) and weave it the same way you did the orange one, only this time go around once.

Tangle the ends of the twigs that stick out. Then take them all together and tie them with string or wire at the top. Then tie another loop for hanging. You can tie this from wire or string.

In the initial picture you can see two birdhouse ideas, of which we have just described the right. The model on the left in the picture is basically the same, except that the branches were left hanging down instead of using them to craft the basket. Instead, only the side rim was woven and a small bowl was incorporated, in which the dumplings are placed. This variation is convenient if you use thicker twigs that are not so easy to bend.

Cut a piece of chicken wire and staple it to the two pieces of wood for the side walls. Repeat on the other side. Then glue or screw these walls (from the bottom) to the piece for the bottom. If you want, you can hide the places with the staples by using a wooden strip. This would also be beneficial to prevent the birds from possibly injuring themselves on protruding staples. Now tie either to the chicken wire string or wire for hanging or attach such hooks for this purpose.
