Over time, the teeth lose their radiance and, from around the age of 40, gum problems become increasingly frequent, which disrupts the overall aesthetic appearance. These developments are quite natural – but fortunately not unavoidable, because anti-aging for the teeth is not difficult at all!

Write hygiene in capital letters

As we age, tooth decay plays a lesser role than the risk of periodontitis, an inflammation of the tooth bed caused by bacteria in the oral cavity. These settle as a coating on the teeth, making them look yellow – and can then migrate along the root of the tooth into the depths. This is visually noticeable in the form of exposed tooth cavities and gums with a red to bluish tinge.

Tip: Brush your teeth thoroughly in the morning and (absolutely!) in the evening before going to bed, rinse in between with an antibacterial mouthwash. Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups, as periodontitis starts painlessly and can worsen and spread unnoticed. In addition, please do not smoke! This can cause the plaque to calcify, which leads to tartar – an ideal stomping ground for bacteria.

Learning the right toothbrushing technique

The older we get, the more the soft tissue recedes, exposing the sensitive tooth gums. The wrong brushing technique (rotation technique), which we were taught in our childhood days, makes periodontal inflammation all the more likely: the circular motion of the brush does not remove bacteria and plaque, but pushes them toward the gumline.

Tip: Discard your too hard toothbrush and invest in a softer one! In addition, brush without pressure – ideally with the sweeping technique. To do this, hold the toothbrush at a slight angle, at the transition from the gum to the tooth, and virtually wipe away the plaque.

Chewing gum

When you’re young, you only know it from hearsay, but when you’re under stress or, at the latest, when you go through menopause, it actually occurs: Dry mouth. If less saliva is produced, this not only causes speech difficulties, but can also throw the entire oral flora out of balance in the long term. This makes it easy for pathogens to attack gums and enamel.

Tip: Drink plenty of fluids to moisten the mouth and chew gum. This stimulates the flow of saliva, which flushes bacteria and acid out of the mouth, thus preserving teeth whiteness and health. Anti-aging for teeth has never been easier!

A lack of nutrients, especially the mineral calcium, can cause teeth to become cracked and more chapped over time.

Tip: It is essential to eat a diet rich in calcium to strengthen the teeth and, incidentally, the bones. Calcium is found mainly in cheese, but also in sesame seeds, nuts and yeast. In principle, it is good to include foods that are as natural as possible in the diet, such as raw vegetables, fruit and wholemeal bread. These must be chewed vigorously, which exercises the teeth and stimulates the flow of saliva. This in turn neutralizes acids and bacteria in the mouth.

Be mild

Gumdrops, chocolate and other sweets are converted into acid after consumption, as are fruit, fruits such as kiwis or apples, and wine. The acids attack the minerals from the tooth enamel and can damage them.

Tip: It is better to eat less sweets and also to be sparing with foods containing acids. If you can’t help it, you should use so-called tooth conditioners from the pharmacy. These products contain remineralizing substances similar to tooth enamel and are applied to the surface of the teeth with a cotton swab. In this way, the acid simply slides off.

Fluoride as anti-aging for the teeth

Tooth enamel needs fluoride to be resistant to acids. Without an intact protective layer, the enamel would deteriorate and, even worse, degrade in the long term. And once it is gone, the pain-sensitive dentin is left unprotected – and also shimmers through gray.

Tip: In addition to brushing with fluoride-containing formulations, you should apply a fluoride gel to your teeth once a week and leave it to act without rinsing. This sustainably supports the substance of the tooth enamel.

Professional teeth whitening

Over time, teeth naturally become more yellowish. This is due to the fact that the pulp, which is surrounded by dentin and enamel, becomes smaller. Accordingly, the distance between the pulp and the tooth surface becomes larger. And last but not least, years of wear and tear on the teeth – as well as regular consumption of staining red wine or coffee – lead to discoloration of the enamel in the long term.

Tip: Unfortunately, you cannot prevent this, but you can conceal it. However, do not rely on whitening strips or whitening formulas from the drugstore. If you want to avoid damaging your tooth enamel and having grayer teeth, you should only have your teeth bleached by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Cheating younger with the right lipstick

The right lipstick can also help to make teeth look a little less yellowish. Blue-tinted reds and pinks make the teeth look a little whiter. On the other hand, you should avoid warm reds, which themselves have a yellowish undertone or are orange, because they visually intensify the discoloration of the teeth.
